The semester is off to a start and the first full week has come to a close. Most notably, this class has frequently been on the debate topic of whether the qualities that may create a successful leader are aspects of nature or nurture. This topic is quite interesting to me. I wonder quite often are people born with the genetic tools/mindset to become great leaders? or is it purely based on upbringing and parental influence. I personally believe it is a combination of the two, however i lean a little more towards genetics. Genetics can affect how social a kid is, their thought process, and how they deal with situations. Certain traits just can't be learned or trained and must come naturally in birth. I can personally apply these concepts with myself and my own hopes for leadership. I believe that being an introvert versus extrovert have significant influence on whether one becomes a leader and what kind of leaders. I am an introverted thinker and it sometimes really influences how quickly i can think on my feet. When i am forced to do a sudden presentation, do some quick brainstorming or come up with question for the teacher/presenter i have quite a bit of difficulty. I can come up with great ideas a little more time, it takes me a little bit of thinking to my self before i can put my thoughts into words. I'm sure with more practice i could improve my abilities in this department, however i personally feel with my born natural thought process which i don't believe i can change i wouldn't quite fit the bill for many leadership positions.
On this topic of fitting different leadership rolls i do feel that there are many different types of leaders. Many of the really well know "great leaders" are very charismatic and great public speakers capable of winning the respect of their people simply though words. I feel that in this new day in age with the changing roles of leaders may people who may not have had leadership qualities in the past may now showcase their abilities with the new technologies coming out. Leaders are not just great speakers with great qualities for public speaking, but leadership opportunities are also available though websites such as youtube, twitter, blogger, etc. With the invention of television this has also created more leadership opportunities. The news anchor may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you say great modern leaders, but they are for many people a familiar face people believe they can trust to tell them the truth about what is going on in the world around them. There are many different leaders. Everyone can be a leader in their own way. Just cause someone may not have the qualities to become the next Obama doesn't mean they cant lead in another way. In many respects we are all leaders. From a young adult coaching a children's soccer team to our greatly respected political leaders of this day in age they all all leaders and are respected by those who look to them for advice and guidance.
